Model Victoria Summer Whetzel Speaks Her Mind

Back in January, model Victoria Summer Whetzel and I were both fashion show judges for PLITZS Fashion Marketing’s Model of the Year competition. I admire how sincere she is. First off, she had a really cute Betsey Johnson telephone purse which has a removable phone set handle that plugs into her cellphone. Basically, her purse can turn into a working phone. How cool? But in all seriousness, Victoria is a really sweet and down to earth model.

During the competition, she pointed something out to me that I didn’t realize. For the Model of the Year competition, there were 3 categories – petite female models, male models and 5’8″ female models. She mentioned how PLITZS Fashion Marketing didn’t have a plus-size category for curvy models to compete in. As a curvy model, Victoria hopes that the next year’s PLITZS Fashion Marketing’s competition will have a plus-size/curvy category.

Meet Victoria:

Jenny A. (Me) : When you were a judge at the PLITZS Fashion Marketing competition, what were you looking for in each of the model candidates?

Victoria Summer Whetzel: I was mostly looking for someone who could command the space as soon as they hit the runway. This is the modeling industry, so everyone is beautiful. But I believe the standard of beauty is changing. It’s more than a pretty face and a physique that lives up to society’s standards. Beauty is taking care of yourself and being proud of who you are.  Beauty is being able to walk a runway and silence a room by your presence. Beauty is being kind to others and being kind to yourself. That’s what I look for in a model.

Me: Is there something you are looking to see more of on the runway? A specific look, personality, walk…etc?

Victoria: I would love to see more plus-size and curvy models of course. Models like Ashley Graham, Denise Bidot and SO many more. Plus-Side models are body activists and I think their activism has moved mountains in the modeling industry. They have paved the way for many emerging models, including myself. I hope one day I can be a leader in this movement too.

Me: You’re trying to break into the modeling industry as plus-size model. What is the hardest challenge you’ve faced so far?

Victoria: I think the hardest challenge I’ve faced so far, is proving to myself that I have what it takes. Far too often, we are the ones holding ourselves back. Sometimes it’s important to take a moment to remind ourselves that we are enough and celebrate ourselves for all that we have to offer.

Question from Liana in the audience: What kind of food do you usually eat? We hear all these stories about how models don’t eat to stay thin because “thin is in.” How do you cope with that kind of mentality?

Victoria: Being thin has never been a part of who I am, so I just try my best to put foods into my body that make me feel good.

Me: Do you eat certain foods before modeling?

Victoria: I don’t eat anything specific. I eat whatever I feel will make me do my best work that day.

Me: If you could be a fruit or veggie, what fruit or veggie would you be?

Victoria: I would be a watermelon. They have a ton of seeds that represent growth and they are better when shared in the summertime. 🙂

Me: Overall, do you find it difficult to be a plus-size model?

Victoria: Being a plus-size model is hard. Being any kind of model in this industry is hard. But you just have to remember that you get to tell people who you are. They don’t get to tell you who you are. One example of this comes from a recent experience here in New York City.

I attended an open call for an independent designer’s showcase for their swimsuit line. Most of the girls at the call were sizes 00-6, but there were a handful of plus-size girls there too. Probably around 5 or 6 in all. All of the petite model’s took turns modeling a bikini from the designer’s line. The designer then decided she wanted me to also model one of her designs. She said I was the most ‘fit’ of the plus-size girls and she wanted a curvy model. She gave me a swimsuit to put on, and as soon as she handed it to me, I realized it was the same exact bathing suit she had the petite models wear. This swimwear was not designed for girls like me. It was made for a model probably around a size 6.

At first, I felt embarrassed because the swimwear didn’t fit, but I put it on anyway. That day, I saw my first real glitch in the industry. I was being asked to wear this suit, so the designer could say she designs for plus-size models. But I am not a Size 6. I am a Size 12 and I am grateful for designers out there who celebrate me for being just that.

New Hairstyle? New Me? Maybe Not Exactly…

Sometimes it’s the little things that make a big difference.

Have you ever felt like you just wanted to switch things up a bit? I don’t know what came over me but, I really wanted a new look. I had bought a LMAX Salon Spa promotion for a wash, cut and dry about a couple of months ago and I thought it would be the perfect time to use it. After all, a new hairstyle can make you look like a new person.

For weeks I was googling all types of hairstyles trying to figure out the best one. Did I want to try something completely extreme and chop off all my hair? Nah. Did I want to have shoulder length hair? Too frizzy. Maybe I should get bangs? Nope, too much work.

What I really wanted something beautiful, classy and fit my face.

When I finally sat down in the chair and the hairstylist asked me what I wanted, I still hadn’t made up my mind. After chatting about all the different trendy hairstyles, I decided to go with “long layers.” The hairstylist looked at me, looked at my hair and then back at me. “You already have long layers!” she laughed “They’re just really long layers!”

The hairstylist trimmed my hair and curled it at the bottom for some volume. When she was done, I looked at myself in the mirror and my hair looked so healthy. I had gorgeous long layers cascading down my shoulders and onto my back.

Before                             After

While my hair didn’t look so different, I definitely felt different. It’s amazing what trimming a few inches can do!

What are your thoughts? What do you think?

Happy Holidays from Model Darien Willardson

I met up with model Darien Willardson in the middle of New York City to find out what he loves about the holidays! Between all the holiday festivities and decorations, New York City is such a beautiful place to celebrate the holidays. Fun fact: Believe it or not, I was really excited that it was snowing in the background during our interview. What better way to feel swept away by the spirit of the holidays as the snowflakes start to fall?

Getting Ready for Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show

It’s finally here! Happy Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show day! I have been looking forward to this since August when I was at the castings. You can read about my experience at the castings here. Since then, I have been following the Victoria’s Secret Angels to see the inside scoop. I heard that Victoria’s Secret Angel Lais Ribeiro is going to be wearing the $2 Million Champagne Nights Fantasy Bra. Oh la la.

I decided to dedicate this week’s posts to the Victoria’s Secret Shanghai Fashion Show. I guess you can say the next few blog posts will be Angel themed.

Here are the important details for tonight’s show:

The show is tonight, Tuesday November 28 at 10/9C on CBS.

Musical guests include: Harry Styles, Miguel, Jane Zhang, Leslie Odom Jr., and Yundi Li.

I just finished watching the Go Behind The Scenes Of The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show Dress Rehearsal sneak peak for the VS Fashion show –  it was fabulous. I always love seeing the excitement backstage. There is so much that goes on behind the scenes of a fashion show between changing outfits, hair & makeup and getting ready to walk. After looking at all of the backstage Bombshell moments, I had to share some of my favorite photos with you.

I can’t wait to see the show. It looks like it is going to be spectacular! I hope that one day I can attend a Victoria’s Secret Fashion show. But for now, I guess cuddling up in my pajamas while watching it on TV will have to do.

What do you think? Are you excited? Who’s your favorite Victoria’s Secret model?

Thank You So Much for All of Your Love and Support

gift-made-package-loop-42231

This blog has been a dream come true and I’m so happy to say that New Style Modé, my fashion blog, has officially turned 1 year old!

I started New Style Modé as a way for you to get to know aspiring fashion models on a more personal level. Now, a year later, not only am I interviewing aspiring fashion models, I started blogging about some of my own fashion experiences and adventures too.

So here is the inside scoop: I am starting to diversify my blog and make it more personal. I will still continue to blog about the aspiring fashion models I meet & I will also be blogging more about my thoughts, feelings and fashion adventures!

This past year in a flash:

I’ve interviewed over 50 aspiring fashion models from all over the world. I was a member of the press for New York Fashion Week in 2016 and 2017. I was trained by international runway coach Mandy Dionne on how to walk the runway. I had my makeup professionally done by Gabriella Golan MUA. I even had my first modeling opportunity with Pause & Unwind, the new self-care subscription box.

Overall, it’s been such a fabulous year!

I want to take a moment to give a HUGE SHOUT OUT to all of the models who I have interviewed. Thank you for giving me your time and opening up about your lives. Thank you to all the fashion show producers, designers and members of the press who have given me the opportunity to become a part of the fashion world. Thank you to my New Style Modé family for always being there for me! I love you so much!

And finally…

Thank you to all of you who have shown your love and support through following, subscribing and reading my blog. I am so honored. You inspire me every day. You are absolutely wonderful. You have been nothing but supportive!

XOXO

Love always,

Meet Becca:

Not only is Becca Avill an international model, she is also a TV presenter (host) in the UK! I really admire her because she is actively pursuing her dream of becoming both a top model & a TV presenter.

She hopes to one day be able to model for Victoria’s Secret or Sports Illustrated. She said that they have the best models and it would be a privilege to model for them.

“Any work that takes me to sunny hot beaches is what I want to be doing!”

When she’s not dressed in high-end designer fashion, she loves wearing simple outfits with designer accessories. She’s all about the accessories – sunglasses, coats, bags, shoes & scarves.

Fun fact: Becca has a whole wardrobe just dedicated to coats!

Becca is always working. She splits her time between being on the runway, doing photo shoots and working on TV. She shared that as a TV presenter, she has already covered different stories like the elections, festivals and events. When she manages to have some free time, she likes to play the piano or go outdoors. If she has a free weekend, she’ll book a trip and do some traveling.

Out of all the celebrities, Becca looks most like Kalish from Game of Thrones. Did you know that she recently did an L’Oreal ad for an online campaign?! They dyed her hair and now she is platinum nude!

Fun fact: Before Becca had her hair dyed, she looked like supermodel Gigi Hadid!

Becca is really into fitness & nutrition. She goes to the gym every day and cooks her own food because she likes to live a healthy lifestyle. She is also vegetarian and watches her environmental footprint.

Her top interests are:

  • Politics
  • Speaking French
  • Fashion
  • Traveling

Between going to the gym and swimming, Becca is very athletic. Did you know that she loves water sports?! She used to kayak but due to her really busy schedule, she doesn’t have as much time anymore.

If she could be a fruit or vegetable, she would be a tomato because they are so diverse, just like her! You can make so many dishes out of tomatoes like delicious sauces and salads.

What It Was Like To Get My Makeup Done by Professional Makeup Artist Gabriella Golan

IMG_1011
Gabriella Golan (left) & Jenny A. (right)

Life is short…but your lashes don’t have to be!

Have you ever wondered what it is like to have your makeup done by a professional makeup artist? One of my best friends, Gabriella Golan is a professional makeup artist! She has done makeup for celebrities, TV shows and models. I was so excited when she agreed to do my makeup for a family event.

Before any runway show, there is usually a whole team of makeup artists applying, brushing and touching-up each model. I’m really not a huge makeup person but I was blown away by Gabriella’s work. Whenever I do wear makeup, I’ll usually put on a little bit of eyeliner and lipstick.

I told Gabriella that I wanted a very natural look. She laid out all of her makeup on the dining room table for me. There was so much to chose from! There were so many foundations… eye shadows… lipsticks… I felt like a model getting ready for the runway! She mixed different colors together on a palette to get the perfect combination for my complexion.

I’ve never wore fake eye lashes but Gabriella convinced me to try some individual lashes. She glued each lash onto my lash line to give my eyes a fuller look. I felt like I didn’t even have to smile because she made my lashes curl upwards which made it look like my eyes were smiling.

We chatted about our families, boys and all the exciting things going on. It was so much fun! When she finished, she spritzed my face to keep the makeup in place so it wouldn’t smudge. I looked in the mirror and was completely awestruck by her work. I loved the way she was able to transform my face into looking like a professional model.

The Final Results:

Thank you so much Gabriella! Love you!
