Model Carley Beck’s hair is crimped for designer Alexandra Popescu-York at New York Fashion Week
Happy St. Patrick’s Day! This season I decided I wanted to switch it up and try something new. Usually I ask fashion models questions that I come up with during New York Fashion Week. This time, I wanted to make it a little fun and asked my friends to come up with questions that they were dying to know about fashion models.
My friend, Mara from the Upper West Side wanted to know : Does all of the runway prep – like dressing up and getting your hair and makeup done – take away from the fun of doing it on your own free time? Watch the video to find out!
Thank you so much for your question Mara!
A little backstory behind the video:
I was behind the scenes at Couture Fashion Week when I saw model Carley Beck getting her hair crimped for her next fashion show. While I’ve seen different crimping videos online, I’ve never scene it in person. So I wanted to get an up close view. I started talking with Carley and we really connected. When we exchanged Instagram accounts, I was so surprised. I was already following her! I looked up and saw that she had the same look across her face. Apparently she recognized my logo and was already following me too! It was so funny! While we didn’t figure out exactly how we know each other, I have a pretty good feeling that it was probably through all my work at past New York Fashion Weeks.

“Give a girl the right activewear and she can conquer the world”
Active wear isn’t just for the gym anymore; it’s becoming the new fashion statement. From cute sports bras to chic leggings, athleisure is the “out of the day.” To sum it all up, athleisure is basically fashionable clothing that is made for working out. But you don’t have you don’t have to workout while wearing it, you can wear it anywhere – sitting in class, taking a walk or just hanging out with friends.
During New York Fashion Week, I saw Janelle FUNARI New York’s performance wear on the runway at Couture Fashion Week. It’s modern. It’s sexy. It’s stylish. Oh, and it just so happens to be designed for the “city warrior” A.K.A the busy New York City girl. Which is what I am.
How cute?! Some of the models walked onto the runway with adorable little pugs. They were wearing designer outfits from Janelle FUNARI New York, showing off the collection’s fashionable dog apparel. Just imagine… you and your dog can look stylish together! #twins
While I typically don’t walk out of the house in just a sports bra and leggings, I could really imagine myself wearing the Janelle FUNARI New York collection. The collection spoke to me. It’s an all-black women’s collection which gives off a feminine yet edgy vibe. I really like the outfits – between the blazers and leggings – It’s definitely something I would wear while walking down New York City.
“Our Couture Athleisure collection was created to empower all who wear it and inspire woman to feel confident, comfortable and elegant! We want our fans to be able to wear our line day to night and to feel like a warrior!” – Janelle FUNARI New York
I really like how this collection can be worn both in the day time and at night. Most of my days are pretty jam-packed so having an outfit that would be perfect for all times of the day sounds like a dream.
My Top 3 Looks on the Runway:
This is my favoritelook from this collection. When I saw model Madison Puricelli walk down the runway, I saw myself.
2. Matching outfits?! Just imagine you and your dog are both wearing designer apparel. How cute? But seriously … adorable
3. To me, this outfit says “Don’t try and mess with me. I am fierce.”

“….Beauty is being able to walk a runway and silence a room by your presence…” – Victoria Whetzel
When model Maggie Doyle walked down the runway at the PLITZS Fashion Marketing’s model competition, captured my attention. I remember sitting at the Judges’ Table and looking into the chattering audience. The moment Maggie walked down the runway, the room they were silent. All eyes were on her.
Even though the PLITZS Fashion Marketing competition was Maggie’s first runway experience, she held herself like professional model. She was able to capture the room.
Almost a month later, when I was at New York Fashion Week, I was very happy to see her walking for Emuleos’s Tougher Than Diamond Collection. It’s really exciting to know that I was there to see the first step towards her modeling career. She walked for PLITZS Fashion Marketing during New York Fashion Week!
Jenny A (Me) : What was it like to win the Women’s Model of the Year Award at PLITZS Fashion Marketing’s model competition? Maggie: It was such an incredible feeling! I had no prior experience modeling but I worked hard leading up to the show. I practiced my walk and selected outfits for each category that would best represent me and that would look good on the runway. When I heard my number being called [as the winner], it was surreal. It inspired me to pursue further modeling opportunities.
Me: What do you think about when you walk down the runway?
Maggie: Before stepping onto the runway, I think about what I need to do in order to best model the clothing. As I take my first step onto the runway, the only thought I have is to exude confidence. I know what I am supposed to do as a model and once I’m on the runway it’s all about delivering that. If you’re not confident, people will notice, and they won’t buy what you’re ultimately trying to sell in both a figurative and literal sense.
Question from Kristy my followers: What was your favorite item to model?
Maggie: My favorite look that I modeled in the PLITZS’s Model of the Year competition was the black formal outfit. I chose a versatile black romper with an attached skirt and heeled booties. It was a bold look and made me feel very confident on the runway.
Me: What is the hardest challenge you’ve faced so far as a model? Maggie: I think the hardest challenge I have faced as a model is accepting that I may not always like the way the clothing looks on me or how the photos turn out, but it’s part of the job. In order to be a good model, you have to wear the clothing with confidence and make it look the way the designer intended on the runway. You have to be willing to get out of your comfort zone.
Me: What was your craziest modeling experience?
Maggie: With the little experience I have had, the PLITZS New York Fashion Week show was my craziest modeling experience. Modeling for twelve different designers in the span of 6 or so hours was hectic. I had no idea what it would be like beforehand! It was crazy walking off the runway to a team of people waiting to help me change outfits, makeup, and hair for the next designer.
Me: What are your goals and dreams? Maggie: My goal in life is to help others. I plan to graduate with a degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Social Innovation. There are far too many people in this world whose needs are not fulfilled and I want to change that. My dream in life is to one day see my photos in magazines.
Me: What are your hobbies? Maggie: I like to cook. I love cooking for friends and coming up with new & healthy recipes. I also like to paint! When I’m visiting home, my mom and I paint together in her studio.
Me: What is your favorite superhero or animated character?
Maggie: My favorite animated character is probably Remy, the rat from Ratatouille. He’s so determined to be a chef despite the fact that he’s a rat. I love his determination!
Question from Gabriella my followers : Do you have a certain workout routine? Maggie: I have a very busy schedule between work and classes so a lot of the time my workout is speed walking through Grand Central to make a subway or train! But when I do have time, I go for a run or take a SoulCycle class. However, I do follow a pescatarian diet and try to cut out any processed foods which helps make up for my erratic workout schedule.
Me: If you could be a fruit or vegetable, what fruit or vegetable would you be? Maggie: I would probably be a mango since it’s delicious and versatile. It also reminds me of being at the beach, which is my favorite place.

When model Darien Willardson told me he was visiting New York, I was so excited to meet with him. I really admire his determination, energy and creativity. Even though it was snowing, he put on his cowboy boots and trudged into the city for our interview.
I loved how much energy he had both in front of the camera as well as off camera. I have to say that I really appreciate his acting experience! He was really comfortable in front of the camera. When I was testing my camera, he started making funny faces! He made the whole experience fun – we were cracking jokes and laughing during the interview.
He didn’t mind when I made him do a few versions of his video interview which personally, was a huge relief. Not only was he patient while I got all the pictures and footage I needed, he also gave me different ideas for our interview.
Without further ado… Enjoy Part 1 of our interview!
Meet Model Darien:
What is your style? A mix between country, skater and hipster. I’ll wear skater boy shoes and slim fit jeans.
Where do you love to shop? H&M, Zumiez, PacSun, Calvin Klein, J. Crew, and Ralph Lauren.
Who is your role model? Johnny Depp because he plays all of his characters really well. Also, Heather Ledger.
What is your #1 hobby? Snowboarding. I actually used to be a snowboarding instructor at Powder Mountain.
Do you have any quirks? Hmm selective hearing? Day dreaming? I would say visually creating something in my head.
What is something that you can’t you live without? My friends and family. I like having people around.
What is your greatest accomplishment? Being a model and actor. I’ve been in 6 films – My top ones are Storm Rider, The Last Straw, Wild Horses and Noctrune.
What are your goals and dreams? I want write a book about my life and my recovery of being a heroin addict. I was addicted to drugs for a year of my life when I was 19-20 years old. Since then, I’ve been clean from heroin. I want to inspire people who are addicts to better their lives and dream big. I want them to think with an open mind and an open heart. I would tell the story about the young creative storyteller that went into drugs, got clean and is now acting in movies – It’s a huge jump. I was the black sheep in my family. Even the lone wolf – I want to show that you can change.
Do you have any advice for aspiring models? Find a hobby. You should have a deeper talent and broaden your talent spectrum. For example, learn how to snowboard. Also, you should also embrace your weaknesses.
Darien has modeled for Theory Clothing Line (NY), Magnum Bikes ( Salt Lake City) and Jane.com (Salt Lake City).
Sometimes it’s the little things that make a big difference.
Have you ever felt like you just wanted to switch things up a bit? I don’t know what came over me but, I really wanted a new look. I had bought a LMAX Salon Spa promotion for a wash, cut and dry about a couple of months ago and I thought it would be the perfect time to use it. After all, a new hairstyle can make you look like a new person.
For weeks I was googling all types of hairstyles trying to figure out the best one. Did I want to try something completely extreme and chop off all my hair? Nah. Did I want to have shoulder length hair? Too frizzy. Maybe I should get bangs? Nope, too much work.
What I really wanted something beautiful, classy and fit my face.
When I finally sat down in the chair and the hairstylist asked me what I wanted, I still hadn’t made up my mind. After chatting about all the different trendy hairstyles, I decided to go with “long layers.” The hairstylist looked at me, looked at my hair and then back at me. “You already have long layers!” she laughed “They’re just really long layers!”
The hairstylist trimmed my hair and curled it at the bottom for some volume. When she was done, I looked at myself in the mirror and my hair looked so healthy. I had gorgeous long layers cascading down my shoulders and onto my back.
While my hair didn’t look so different, I definitely felt different. It’s amazing what trimming a few inches can do!
Want to know what it’s like to model for Couture Fashion Week? Model Maanami Naomi shares her fashion experience at New York Fashion Week’s Couture Fashion Week with us. Watch and find out what she really thinks!
Just wait for it! At the end of the video, you’ll get to see the elegant black dress that Maanami modeled for which was designed by fashion designer Azulant Akora. ❤
Hats? Gloves? Scarves? Oh my! So far, this week has been absolutely freezing in New York. If you’re braving the winter like me, I hope you’re staying warm! Yesterday, I stopped off at the mall just to buy more leggings so that I would be ready for today.
Not only has it been extremely cold, it’s been a pretty quiet week here in the city. Honestly, I think it’s the perfect time to check out all of the holiday decorations without trying to squeeze though the massive crowds. I love walking down 5th Avenue and looking at all the decorations. Every year I try to visit the tree at Rockerfeller Center and watch Sak Fifth Avenue’s light show. This year, I’m planning to go downtown and visit the Holiday Market at the Oculus – hopefully before it’s over on January 7th!
In celebration of the holiday season, model Joi Simoné shared her holiday wish list with us. Personally, I really like her wish list since it includes things she wants for herself, things that she wants for others and goals that she set for herself.
Joi’s Holiday Wish List:
1.) World peace – I would like for the world to be less chaotic – meaning less war and more love.
2.) Art supplies – I love to have more art supplies so I can create abstract, murals and other paintings during my free time.
3.) Traveling – I want to visit Paris and Rome to learn about the culture, history and to eat great food.
4) Modeling– I would love to walk on the runway for many designers such as Donatella Versace, Giorgio Armani, Roberto Capucci, Alberta Ferretti, Giuseppe Zanotti, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Coco Chanel, Christian Louboutin, Pierre Balmain, Adeline André, and Haider Ackermann.
